Your first appointment with a surgeon is always filled with uncertainties like what should I bring, how do I get there how early should is show up… We are going to answer as many of your questions and hopefully more with this post.
If you are having a cosmetic consultation…
If your appointment is cosmetic you should have the following on the day of your consult:
- A government issued Identification Card (ie: Drivers License, State ID, Military ID or Pass Post)
- List of any and all medications you are currently taking (ie: proscribed, over the counter, or herbal)
- Arrive about 15 minutes early to the appointment so that you can fill out paper work
- Have the consultation fee ready when you finish filling out the paper work (ie: Cash, Credit Card, or Check)
After you have finished the paper work the medical assistant will call you back to the exam room at that time she will ask you a few basic questions and get height and weight on you. You then will watch a video on the procedure that you are interested in doing, after the video the doctor will come in the room and discuss your procedure. At that time he will answer any and every question you may have no matter how small you might think it is. The doctor will then give you a gown to change in to and leave the room. When he returns he will be with his medical assistant at that time the doctor will do your exam take measurements and before photos of you, while discussing what your options are and his opinion on what might be best course of action for the results you are looking for.

Whan you set your appointment the receptionist will ask you for your insurance information so that it can be verified before you come in for you appointment, after you fill out your paperwork is complete your co-pay is due if you have one. Then you will be called back by the doctors medical assistant at that time she will take weight and height on you be sure you have a list of your medications that you currently take including the name dosage and the reason you are taking the medication, the medical assistant will enter it into your chart. Choose a surgeon you can trust
Plastic surgery, whether for cosmetic or reconstructive purposes, involves many choices. The first and most important is selecting a surgeon you can trust. If you begin the process with an understanding that, like any surgery, plastic surgery carries some risk, you will appreciate the importance of choosing a qualified surgeon.
- A qualified plastic surgeon is not simply a physician with “good” credentials, but one with “recognized” credentials and specialized training specific to the procedure you are considering.
- A doctor board certification is one of the best indicators of his or her training. Ask for certification from The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), the only one of the 24 boards approved by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) that certifies physicians in plastic surgery of the face and all areas of the body. To be ABPS board-certified, a physician must meet these rigorous standards
- Graduate from an accredited medical school
- Complete at least five years of surgical training following medical school with a minimum of two years of plastic surgery residency training
- Pass comprehensive oral and written exams American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) Members must be certified by the ABPS or in Canada by The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
- Complete continuing medical education including patient safety each year
- Perform surgery in accredited, state-licensed or Medicare-certified surgical facilities
To verify that your plastic surgeon is board certified in the United States, you may contact the American Board of Plastic Surgery directly at (215) 587-9322 or visit the board website at www.abplsurg.org
Your choices for cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery
Cosmetic plastic surgery includes surgical and nonsurgical procedures to improve your appearance. Healthy individuals with a positive outlook and realistic expectations are appropriate candidates for cosmetic procedures. Plastic surgery is a personal choice and you should do it for yourself, not to fulfill someone else desires or to try to fit any sort of ideal image. Reconstructive plastic surgery restores from and/or function to any part of the body affected by birth defects, injury or disease. The goal of reconstructive surgery is to restore appearance and function as close to normal as possible, but you must also approach this type of surgery with realistic expectations. You achieve the best results from plastic surgery if you and your surgeon communicate openly and work together to achieve realistic goals. An understanding of your goals, expectations and motivation is essential to a successful partnership between you and your surgeon, helping both of you to determine whether plastic surgery is the right choice for you.
Making an informed decision
As mentioned above it is important to do your homework to insure that you are choosing the right physician for you. Ask questions or even take a list with you to your consultation, check his/her credentials, ask to see photographs of prior work, does he/she have privileges at the local hospitals or surgery centers, etc. And do not be turned off by doctors charging a fee for your consultation. This helps to keep appointment time available for future patients that they know are seriously interested in the doctor time and having a procedure.

Our office is more than happy to take your call to help answer your questions and schedule your personal consultation

DOT Therapy ....the secret is out!
Am I a good candidate for DOT Therapy?
DOT Therapy can be performed safely on nearly anyone with signs of aging skin. For more information, make an appointment today to ask your doctor if DOT Therapy is right for you.
What is the procedure like?
Prior to the procedure your doctor may apply a topical anesthetic to your skin to make the procedure more comfortable during the treatment. Intravenous sedation is not required. As you lie comfortably in the doctor’s chair, your skin is immediately renewed by DOT Therapy. The doctor will move the laser around the treatment area utilizing customized settings. After the procedure, your skin will be red, similar to a sunburn. The redness continues for a few days. By day three or four, you will experience some peeling as your fresh and younger looking skin appears. In most cases, your skin will return to its normal appearance in about seven to ten days. After the laser procedure is completed, a cold compress will be applied. During the recovery period you will apply a hydrating lotion to keep your skin moist and promote healing. In most cases, you may resume applying makeup after about three days.
How long does the procedure take?
In most cases, DOT Therapy can be performed to an entire face within twenty minutes. Smaller areas take less time.
How many treatments are required with DOT Therapy?
In most cases, excellent results can be achieved in a single session. However, persons with severe wrinkling or deep acne scars may benefit from a series of treatments spaced about one month apart. Your doctor will advise you on what results you can reasonably expect.
What precautions do I need to take after the procedure to maintain my results?
Basic skin care, thorough cleaning and sun protection are key to ensuring your results endure. Wear sunscreen and avoid direct sun exposure whenever possible, but especially in the weeks following treatment.
Is DOT Therapy safe?
DOT Therapy has received clearance from the Food & Drug Administration.
DOT Therapy is safer than traditional laser resurfacing treatments. Because sedation is not required, the patient is only exposed to a topical anesthetic. Injections and sedation are not necessary with DOT Therapy. Because DOT offers the doctor so much control and customization, patients are treated faster and more precisely. DOT Therapy leaves the skin around each perforation or ‘dot’ intact, which allows for rapid healing and improved complexion. The footprint that the DOT leaves is not as deep as traditional laser procedures which often created painful damage and bruising. Because the DOT creates a shallower, wider pattern, it promotes rapid healing. DOT is minimally invasive and extremely safe, while still delivering excellent results.

Featuring BodyTite
Check out Vogue’s June 2009 which features BodyTite on page 142.
Dr. Gracia
along with a select few other plastic surgeons are leading the way in new technologies. “If it gains FDA approval later this year, Invasix’s BodyTite will become the first liposuction device to use radiofrequency– a medium formerly reserved for noninvasive skin tightening—to liquefy fat cells with what it’s proponents claim is greater speed and efficacy that it’s laser counter parts.” With the traditional lipectomy (liposuction) fat is removed via a power suction assisted machine and cannula, and can sometimes leave an undesired look of sagging skin. With Invasix’s BodyTite procedure the fat is melted before being suctioned away, while also delivering heat to the surface of the skin for tightening.
